Pratyush Tripathy

Biography

Pratyush Tripathy is a PhD student advised by Prof. Kathy Baylis. Pratyush has undergraduate and masters level training in Geoinformatics. Before starting his doctoral research, Pratyush worked as a Senior Associate at the Indian Institute for Human Settlements, where he contributed to various practice and research projects.

Research

Pratyush's research focuses on leveraging satellite datasets in combination with geospatial and AI techniques to better understand and address global environmental and societal issues. His doctoral work investigates the impacts of extreme weather events on human and economic development in India.

In the past, Pratyush has developed novel methods for urban spatial analysis, including city-scale building height estimation from satellite images, urban growth models, population disaggregation, street network analysis, and spatial survey sampling techniques. He has actively contributed to projects funded by the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. Pratyush is a strong advocate for open-source tools and contributes to the community with his tools such as the pyrsgis Python package, COntinuity IN Street networks (COINS), and the Global Flood Mapper.
