Matthew Snidal

Biography

Matt Snidal is a postdoctoral scholar in Geography. He received his PhD in Sociology from the University of Texas at Austin and is an AmeriCorps alumnus, having completed a service year with City Year Chicago. Outside of his work, he enjoys hiking, walking his dogs, and cooking.

Research

Matt studies topics related to sociology, education, and demography. Much of his research focuses on how schools disproportionately apply school suspension across intersectional lines of race/ethnicity, gender, and class. He is particularly interested in expanding our understanding of suspension experiences and their long-term implications for academic outcomes by considering not only whether students have been suspended, but also how frequently they’ve been suspended, how much school instruction they miss following suspension, and when suspensions occur. In addition to his work on school discipline, Matt is also interested migratory patterns of populations within the U.S.
