The spatial@ucsb Computing Lab (Ellison Hall 2616)

The spatial@ucsb computing lab (SCL) is a resource for geography graduate students and is an extension of the spatial@ucsb center--an innovative university-wide resource and research center at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Its mission is to facilitate the integration of spatial thinking into processes for learning and discovery in the natural, social, and behavioral sciences; to promote excellence in engineering and applied sciences; and to enhance creativity in the arts and humanities. The SCL is used for walk-in assistance and for workshops that promote spatially related research and teaching for the entire campus, as well as for all disciplines that share an interest in the importance of spatial thinking in science, in artistic endeavors, in the development of spatial analytic tools, and in the role of place in society.

The spatial@ucsb computing lab consists of 15 high-end computers, 9 of which have dual monitor stations to enhance spatially related visualization.

Room Use Policy
The room is reserved for training sessions and workshops by Karen Doehner (). At all other times, the room is open to all Geography Graduate Students. This policy assumes that our graduate students are responsible for doing their part to keep the lab a comfortable and productive workplace for all to enjoy. Two principles provide the foundation of this policy:

  1. Students should respect the work environment of lab users.
  2. Students should protect the computer equipment and other resources provided in a responsible manner.

The following reminders are meant to ensure the productive and beneficial use of the lab for all students.

Noise
Please do not let your noise level disturb others working in the Lab. If someone's conversation bothers you, politely let them know. Please honor requests made by others that request you to quiet down.

    When leaving
  1. Please log off of the computer.
  2. Always leave your workspace in better condition than you found it in. Be sure to throw your trash away, clean the work surface, and put your recyclable items in the proper container in the hallway outside 2620. Don't leave papers, containers, or wrappers behind.
  3. If you use the whiteboard, please wipe it down.
  4. Please push your chair in and lower the monitor arms before leaving.
  5. If you are the last to leave, please turn off the lights.
  6. If you use the podium, please insert the laptop back inside, turn off the projector, and lock the podium.
  7. No food or drinks are allowed in the SCL.
  8. Do not store things in the SCL.

Lab use
The Lab is also for use by spatial workshops - when a workshop has reserved the lab, the lab is closed for all other access. Please pay attention to the sign on the lab door. If the "Workshop in Progress--Please Do Not Disturb" sign is posted, do not enter the facility. There will also be a weekly calendar posted outside the lab door listing upcoming training sessions or workshops.

Maintenance
Don't bring your bikes or skateboards into the Lab. The university prohibits bringing bikes and skateboards inside university buildings, because they restrict access for the disabled and impede emergency evacuation.

For any lab-related hardware or software issues, please email .
